He Sent It Before He Left / Chapter 4 / 7

Chapter 4

Ryan Hale stood in the doorway in his dusty uniform with his face drawn from travel and exhaustion and the specific expression of a man who has walked into a room and understood its contents in a single second. His eyes moved across everything in the order of priority. The iron. My belly. The papers on the table. The fake death certificate with his name on it. The two men. His mother.

He did not shout.

He did not rush.

He stepped inside and reached for the counter phone with one hand and looked at his mother.

"Step away from my wife," he said.

His voice was low and completely controlled, and what made it frightening was not the volume but the quality of it, the voice of a man who has spent twelve years in environments where losing control was a form of failure, and who had just walked into his own kitchen and found his pregnant wife with a hot iron near her belly and his own name on a forged death certificate.

Victoria's hand, the one holding the iron, dropped to her side.

The two men looked at each other.

Ryan said: "Send police to my address," into the phone. A pause. "My mother is trying to murder my wife." He said it with the same steadiness he might use to give grid coordinates.

One of the men made a decision that was visible in his posture, the decision to leave, and Ryan watched him make it and moved slightly to the right and said, without raising his voice, "You're not going to do that."

The man stopped.

Ryan reached past him and set the iron down on the counter without touching the soleplate and picked up the fake death certificate and looked at it for three seconds and set it back down.

"Wrong initial," he said, almost to himself. "Wrong seal. Wrong format." He looked at his mother. "You know I would have known within a minute."

Victoria said his name.
