Chapter 1

I was standing beside Iris's bed when Grant arrived. Her small hand was wrapped around my fingers, and the heart monitor kept beeping like it was counting down my marriage. Madison stood behind him in a cream coat, one hand resting on her stomach. She smiled at me like she had already taken my place.

Grant looked at our daughter for barely a second. Then he looked at me and said, "Madison is pregnant." His voice was calm, but it was cruel on purpose. He wanted the nurses to hear it. He wanted me to break in front of witnesses.

I did not move. I did not ask how long. I did not ask if he loved her. I looked at Madison's bracelet, then at the curve of her stomach, then back at my husband. He seemed disappointed that I was still breathing normally.

Then he said the next part. "I'm filing for divorce." Madison lowered her eyes, pretending she was ashamed. Eleanor, my mother-in-law, stepped into the doorway in pearls and winter white. That was when I knew this was not a confession. It was a setup. Grant wanted custody of Iris. Eleanor wanted me labeled emotional and unsafe. Madison wanted me removed from the room like old furniture. All three of them had chosen my daughter's hospital bed as the stage.

My name is Laura Mercer. I have been married to Grant for nine years, and for the last eleven months I have known exactly what kind of man I married, because I have spent those eleven months building a case against him one bank transfer at a time.

Grant stepped into the hallway and spoke to security. I heard him say, "My wife is unstable." The young guard looked uncomfortable, but money has a voice in hospitals too. Grant pointed toward me like I was a threat. Madison touched her stomach and watched, the way you watch a play you already know the ending to.
