Chapter 1

Julian Blackwood came home from Aspen expecting a warm house, a quiet wife, and a little boy still carrying his name. He had spent Christmas in another woman's bed and called it a business emergency. By the time he turned his key in the front door, Elena had already taken the child, emptied the warmth from the house, and left behind something far colder than divorce.

The obsidian Mercedes rolled over the frozen gravel just after dawn, tires crunching softly beneath a pale Connecticut sky. Julian stepped out in his cashmere coat, exhaling a white plume of breath, looking exactly like the man he believed himself to be, successful, untouchable, too clever to be caught.

Tokyo. That was the lie. Emergency merger negotiations, urgent calls, impossible time zones. It sounded important enough that Elena had never questioned it. While she spent Christmas alone with their two-year-old son, Harrison, Julian had been tucked inside a private Aspen chalet with Isabel, a twenty-four-year-old marketing coordinator who looked at him like he was the sun.

He reached into the back seat for his briefcase, packed with fake receipts and duty-free whiskey, enough paperwork to make his lie look polished. Julian loved details. Details were why he ran Blackwood Logistics. Details were why people feared him. Details were why he believed he could manage a wife, a mistress, a company, and a secret life without ever letting the pieces touch.

He climbed the stone steps of the colonial estate and smiled faintly, expecting Elena to open the door before he even used his key, expecting her tired face, her quiet forgiveness, Harrison's little feet pounding across the foyer. "Dada."

But the door stayed shut. Julian unlocked it himself.
