Chapter 6

The official review that followed the northern approach incident documented that the infiltration attempt had targeted the communications shack — the same shack I had been standing beside at 0615 when Morrow came to tell me we had a visitor. The review also documented that the approach route had exploited the 0300 false-positive pattern, which meant whoever had planned it had been watching our response times for at least two weeks and had calculated that the conditioning would hold.

It held for everyone except the person in Watchtower Three.

Morrow was reassigned to administrative duty within the week — not as punishment for what had happened at the gate, because the review did not focus on that, but because I needed someone in the northern approach coordination role who could work alongside Ava Cross without the performance getting in the way of the work.

He accepted the reassignment without argument.

I think he understood that the argument was one he had already made and already lost, in front of thirty witnesses, on the morning he dropped a rifle in the dirt and discovered that the rifle, and the woman who carried it, had made him irrelevant before he ever opened his mouth.

The lynx tattoo meant something specific. I found out what it meant six weeks later, through a contact three levels above my clearance who told me in a conversation that did not officially occur, that the mark was used by a unit whose designation I will not reproduce here, that had operated across four theaters in twelve years and had generated a record that was classified at a level I was not cleared to access.

I thanked him.

I went back to Dust Bowl.

I did not tell Ava I had looked. I did not need to. She had already told me everything relevant in the first thirty seconds — in the grip of her hand on the rifle, in the quality of her stillness, in the way she had looked past Morrow to the ridge line and named the watchtower before I asked.

She stayed at Dust Bowl for two more months.

In that time, the northern approach was never compromised again.

The 0300 alerts stopped being treated as false positives.

And Corporal Tate, who had asked about the tattoo on her wrist on the morning she arrived, requested a transfer to Watchtower Three duty three weeks into her assignment.

I approved it.

He turned out to be one of the better observers we had on that side of the perimeter.

Some things teach themselves, if you put people close enough to the right example.
