Chapter 3

The scrape of the chair across the linoleum cut through the remaining laughter as cleanly as the tray had cut through the noise before it. Every eye that had been drifting returned to her. She rose without hurry, without hesitation, with the specific economy of motion of someone who never wastes movement because waste is expensive in the places where she has learned to move.
Her eyes moved across the six men in front of her. Not hostilely. Not performatively. With the flat measuring quality of someone reading a room for the information it contains rather than the impression she wants to make.
"You made a mistake," she said.
Hayes laughed. "And what mistake would that be?"

"You assumed your rank gave you permission to understand things beyond your clearance."
The mess hall had gone completely quiet in the specific way that institutional spaces go quiet when two hundred people have simultaneously decided that whatever is happening in front of them requires their full attention.
Avery rolled back her left sleeve.
The marking on her inner forearm was small and precise — the kind of thing that most people in this building would look at and not recognize, not because it was ambiguous but because it existed in a vocabulary they had never been given access to. It was not a tattoo in any conventional sense. It was the kind of designation that certain people carry in certain places for reasons that do not appear in any field manual that the soldiers currently surrounding her had clearance to read.
The sergeant immediately behind Hayes's left shoulder stopped smiling.

His face did something that faces do when a piece of information has arrived that reorganizes the context for everything that preceded it. He looked at the marking. He looked at Avery. He looked at Hayes.
Hayes had not seen what his sergeant had seen. He was still in his previous understanding of the situation, which was that he had publicly humiliated a junior soldier and was now in the process of confirming the lesson. He looked at Avery's forearm and then at her face and said, "What exactly is that supposed to mean?"
