Chapter 1

My name is Evelyn Brooks, and after forty-two years of marriage, I buried the love of my life on a gray Tuesday in October.
Less than two hours after we returned from the cemetery, the house Robert and I had built together no longer felt like mine. The scent of funeral lilies still clung to my black dress. Rain tapped against the windows of the foyer where I'd greeted three decades of holiday guests. My suitcases sat by the garage door, already packed, as though someone had decided this before we'd even left the gravesite.

My daughter-in-law, Jennifer, stood at the base of the curved staircase with her arms folded and a small, satisfied smile on her face.
"Your good life is over, Evelyn," she said, calm as ordering coffee. "Starting tonight, you'll sleep where the dog sleeps."
I stared at her, certain I'd misheard.
Beside her stood my only son, Matthew. The little boy whose fevers I'd stayed up all night monitoring. The young man Robert and I had put through law school without a single complaint. The husband whose first house we'd helped furnish room by room. He looked at the marble floor. Not one word. Not one protest. Not even a quiet mom, this isn't right.

My grandchildren, Olivia and Jack, watched from the staircase landing, too confused to understand what was unfolding beneath them.
"Jennifer," I said quietly, "why are you doing this?"
