Chapter 2

Crowell was the institutional layer. Where Knox operated through humiliation's sound and spectacle, Crowell operated through paper, through the official record, through the specific authority of a man who could write demerits into existence and have those demerits accepted as factual because he was the one writing them. He read my empty file in front of the formation with the theatrical disappointment of someone who has decided the audience needed a lesson and the lesson was that an empty file was a verdict.
He was not wrong about the file being a verdict. He was wrong about which direction the verdict ran.
The obstacle course on the second day was Crowell's attempt to produce a visible failure, a moment he could document. The hose was Knox's addition, casual enough to be deniable, pointed at my face while I was on the cargo net with both hands occupied. I reached the top anyway and came down the other side and Crowell made me run it again, and I ran it again, and by sundown I had ammunition crates on both shoulders and raw collar and the specific tiredness that is not the tired of someone being broken but the tired of someone who is doing very boring work.

The letter was the hardest part of the assignment.
I knew Knox would burn it when he intercepted it at mail call. I had been told he would. The letter was not a real document in the operational sense, but it was a real document in every other sense, because the teammate it was from had been real, and the absence he had left was real, and when Knox lit the corner and narrated the burning for the recruits with the specific satisfaction of a man destroying something he believed was weakness, I watched the paper curl into ash and I filed the watching in the part of myself where I kept things I would need to testify to later.
The refusal to strike Jenkins was not a miscalculation. It was a data point. What they did with the refusal was also a data point. The way Knox narrated the shearing was a data point. The recruits who laughed because laughing felt safer when a man with rank was leading the laughter were data points. Every piece of it was being stored with the specific fidelity of someone who had been doing this kind of work for eleven years and understood that the documentation was the whole job, and that the documentation required living through the thing being documented.

When Knox shoved the mirror at me afterward and called me nobody, I looked once. I had seen my own face in worse conditions. I handed it back.
Evening count came with rain.
